The oral acute toxicity of 1,1,1,3,3 -pentachlorobutane was assessed by means of a fixed dose method. Rats were dosed at 5000, 2000, 500 and 50 mg/kg. Mortality was observed at >=500 mg/kg, with a LD50 determined within the range 50 -500 mg/kg.

When tested for local irritation, PCBa resulted irritating to the rabbit skin. On the other hand, only minimal irritation, not meeting the criteria for classification, was observed in rabbit eye.

A bacterial reverse mutation assay did not give positive results, indicating a low mutagenic potential of PCBa.
