Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

One key study has been identified as having assessed the biodegradation in water screening test. This study followed OECD 301D guideline and was performed to GLP standards: evidence of inherent biodegradability (50% degradation after 28 days) was obtained.
A supporting study is also available: BOD/COD ratio was measured over 5-35 days, using acclimated and on-acclimated microbial inocula. Progressive degradation reaching 79-83% (sewage sludge inocula) or 38.6% (commerical Polyseed inoculum) after 35 days was reported, supportimng inherent biodegradability. However degradation rates were not sufficient to meet specific ECHA criteria for inherent biodegradability.

Additional information

Under aerobic conditions, 1.5mg/l of test material was added to non-adapted sewage sludge waste for a period of 28 days in a Closed Bottle test: this resulted in 50% degradation over a 28 exposure period. A supporting investigation of BOD/COD ratios also found significant biodegradation (maximally 38.6 -82.9% after 35 days). Accordingly tertiary butyl acetate is considered to be inherently biodegradable, not meeting specific ECHA criteria.
