Description of key information

NOEC: 0.1 (Rhodes et al., 1995), No effects up to the limit of water solubility observed.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The NOEC for the toxicity of di-(n-hexyl, n-octyl, n-decyl) phthalate towards Daphnia magna is reported as 0.1 mg/l by Rhodes et al. (1995) and hence above the limit of water solubilty.

The toxicity of a structurally related phthalic acid ester (alkyl chain C11, Diundecyl phthalate) was evaluated in 21 -day chronic studies on daphnia magna. In the experiments no effects were observed up to the highest concentration tested (0.059 mg/L and 1 mg/L). The results are in line with results being reported in other review documents where no toxicity in the range of the water solubility is observed for phthalate with an alkyl chain length of C6 and above.
