On the basis of annex XI of REACh regulation, the present endpoint could be waived based on:

  • the lack of toxic effects shown in the available acute aquatic toxicity tests with HfO2 used for read-across: no observed effects in any of the tests for acute toxicity to algae, aquatic invertebrates and fish.
  • the extremely low water solubility of HfO2 <5 µg/L (see water solubility in section 4.8. for HfO2 used for read across)
  • and its affinity to form complexes with organic matter (Kd values are reported for Hf metal, with a range of 1500 – 8500 L/kg: that show a strong affinity of the metal for particulate matter)

These last two points make the major degradation product HfO2 not bioavailable to aquatic organisms ; it is not relevant to conduct a bioconcentration test.
