Description of key information

The short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates of Arctical was assessed according to OECD Test Guideline 202 using the acute immobilisation test method using fully stoppered vessels in view of the potential volatility of the substance. Several time intervals and centrifugation rotations were used to find the best way and the maximum water solubility. The maximum water solubility in the test media varied from 0.06 - 2.5 mg/l. Finally for the exposure concentrations stirring for 24 hours and filtration through a 0.2 mm sieve were used to achieve the maximum water solubility in the test media, which were diluted thereafter to have 5 test concentrations. Analysis of the freshly prepared 56 and 100% v/v saturated solution test preparations at 0 and 24 hours showed measured test concentrations of 0.0743/0.053 and 0.144/0.108, respectively. All others were below the Level of Quatification (LoQ). A concentration range was established using 10, 18, 32, 56 and 100 % v/v saturated solutions for the final test. During the first 24h no effects were seen at 56% saturated solution and circa half of the Daphnia became immobile at 100% but not reaching an EC50. At 48h no effects were seen at 56% saturated solution and 100% immobility was seen at 100% saturated solutions.  The test substance could not be detected after 24 and 48 hours at the 56% saturated solution. At 100% the test substance could be detected (0.105/0.102 mg/l) after 24h exposure. This indicates that the test item was unstable. A suitable reasoning was not found. Fully stoppered vessels were used to decrease volatility, the substance was not surface active, possibly oversaturation or some adsorption to Daphnia may have occurred. In view of the no effects at 56% solution and the 100% effect at 100% saturated solution, the EC50 was derived as a geometric mean between these two and based on initial measured concentration being the most reliable ones. This results in an EC50 value: 0.089 mg/l.
