Description of key information

MPD is readily biodegradable, based on a reliable key study with degradation up to 80% from BOD in an OECD 301C test. In a supporting OECD 301D study MPD was observed to achieve 74% biodegradability after 28 days from DOC monitoring.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

readily biodegradable

Additional information

Two studies on MPD were undertaken to determine the substance´s biodegradability including OECD Guideline 301C (Ready biodegradability: A modified MITI Test (I)) and an OECD Guideline 301D (Ready biodegradability: Closed Bottle Test). The MITI test was conducted with analyzing BOD, DOC and GC in the solution. Based on the results of this study, MPD was observed to be readily biodegradable due to average degradation of 74% from BOD and an average degradation of 82% from DOC. In a supporting OECD 301D study where only DOC was tracked to identify the degradation, MPD was observed to achieve 74% biodegradation after 28 days, but the 10 day criterion was not met. The newer study which also involved more analytical paths was taken as key.
