Description of key information

The toxicity of the substance to STP microorganisms was examined in a study according to OECD TG 209 and in compliance with GLP (Huntingdon, 2005). In this study, the substance was inoculated with activated sludge from a sewage treatment plant treating predominantly domestic sewage at nominal concentrations of 0 (control), 66.5, 133, 266, 532 and 1064 mg/L. No test substance analysis was performed (or required). However, nominal concentrations were adjusted for a test substance content of 67.7% in the test material giving adjusted nominal concentrations of 0 (control), 45, 90, 180, 360 and 720 mg/L, respectively. Oxygen consumption rates were recorded at 3 hours after exposure, and inhibition of respiration calculated. The specific respiration rates of control cultures established at the end of the two test series (25.4 mg02/g/h) were 97% and 93% of the rates of those established at the start (26.3 and 27.3 mgO2/g/h). The highest tested concentration of Violiff in the definitive test (1064 mg/L) caused 82% inhibition. The NOEC was not reported but it was determined to be 66.5 mg/L since only 4% inhibition was observed. The EC50 and NOEC of the test substance to STP microorganisms are 349 mg/L and 66.5 mg/L (equivalent to 45 mg/L when corrected for purity), respectively.
