Description of key information

The toxicity of the substance to microorganisms was determined as part of a toxicity control in a OECD TG 209 study in compliance with GLP criteria. A mixed population of activated sewage sludge micro-organisms was obtained from an aeration stage of sewage treatment plant. The activated sewage sludge was exposed to an aqueous dispersion of the test item at concentration of 10, 100 and 1000 mg/L (3 replicates of the 1000 mg/L test concentration) for a period of 3 hours at a temperature of 20 ± 2 °C with the addition of a synthetic sewage sludge as a respiratory substrate. The rate of respiration was determined after 3 hours contact tome and compared to data for the control and a reference item, 3,5-dichlorophenol.

Inhibition of the respiration in the control, 10 and 100 mg/L treated groups by the addition of the test substance did not occur. 0 - 18% inhibition was found in 1000 mg/L treated replicates after 3 hours exposure. No statistically significant toxic effects were shown at any of the test concentrations employed. In addition, 16, 56 and 83% inhibition in respiration was observed in the 3.2, 10 and 32 mg/L reference item treated groups, respectively. Based on the findings, the 3 -h NOEC of the test substance for microorganism toxicity was determined to be 1000 mg/L.
