Description of key information
LC50 (10 d) = 3318.81 mg a.i./kg dw (433.61 mg/kg dw test substance) for Corophium volutator (OSPAR guideline, 2005; read-across)
NOEC (10 d) = 262.16 mg a.i./kg dw for Corophium volutator (OSPAR guideline, 2005; read-across)
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
There are no data available on the sediment toxicity of D-Glucopyranose, oligomeric, heptyl glycosides. However, there are reliable data for category member substances which are considered suitable for read-across based on a category approach. This read-across is in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 and justified in detail in the overall summary (IUCLID Chapter 6.1) and within the category justification attached in IUCLID Section 13. In this case of read-across, the best suited (highest degree of structural similarity, nearest physico-chemical properties) read-across substance was used for the assessment. Nevertheless, as it can be seen in the data matrix of the category justification in IUCLID Section 13 and the overall summary (IUCLID Chapter 6.1), all reliable data in the category support the hazard assessment of each category member by showing a consistent pattern of results.
Data are read-across to D-Glucopyranose, oligomeric, hexyl glycosides (CAS: 54549-24-5) and D-Glucopyranose, oligomeric, decyl octyl glycosides (CAS: 68515-73-1). The toxicity of D-Glucopyranose, oligomeric, hexyl glycosides towards sediment organisms was investigated in one short-term study with the endobenthic marine amphipod Corophium volutator (M-Lab, 2003). The study was performed according to the “OSPARCOM guideline (1995): Sediment bioassay using an amphipod Corophium sp.”. At test termination after 10 days a LC50 of > 1547 mg/kg dw and a NOEC of 698 mg/kg sediment dw resulted ( M-Lab, 2003).The toxicity of D-Glucopyranose, oligomers, decyl octyl glycosides (CAS: 68515-73-1) towards sediment organisms was investigated in two short-term studies with the endobenthic marine amphipod Corophium volutator. The tests were performed according to the OSPAR guideline (2005): A Sediment Bioassay using an amphipod Corophium sp. – Marine sediment toxicity test or the OSPARCOM guideline (1995): Sediment bioassay using an amphipod Corophium sp. At test termination after 10 days a NOEC of 262.16 mg a.i./kg dw and LC50 values of 3318.81 mg a. i./kg dw (Opus Plus Limited Flotta, 2008) and > 433.61 mg/kg dw (Environment & resource technology Ltd, 1998) were observed for the endpoint mortality.
In conclusion D-Glucopyranose, oligomeric, hexyl glycosides and D-Glucopyranose, oligomeric, decyl octyl glycosides exhibited no or only low toxicity to sediment organisms under conditions tested. Furthermore, due to the ready biodegradability and the low log Koc (-0.8 to 1) of D-Glucopyranose, oligomeric, heptyl glycosides it is not likely that the substance persists and/or adsorbs to the sediment. Therefore, no long-term toxicity data with sediment organisms should be generated.
