Description of key information

Acutely very toxic to aquatic algae.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Data on short-term toxicity to aquatic algae are available in the WHO Concise International Chemical Assessment Document 20 (CICAD) on Mononitrophenols (2000), the BUA report 75 for 2- and 4-nitrophenol (1992; update supplementary report 2003) and the ECB IUCLID (2000) for 2-nitrophenol. The most sensitive value is given for Scenedesmus subspicatus tested in a chronic cell multiplication inhibition test (according to UBA guideline of 1982). The EC50 after 96 h was determined to be 0.39 mg/L (EC10 after 96 h = 0.01 mg/L). However, a second study with Scenedesmus subspicatus tested in the chronic cell multiplication inhibition test (according to UBA guideline of 1982) gave an EC50 value after 168 h of 8.4 mg/L and an EC10 of 1.4 mg/L. Further data are given for acute toxicity to algae. The EC50 values range between 1.53 and 6.8 mg/L with different species and exposure periods. Nevertheless, due to responsibe care reasons, 2-nitrophenol is regarded as acutely very toxic to aquatic algae.
