Description of key information

The log Kow values of the majority of the constituents of the tested UVCB substance was determined to be above 6.2.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Log Kow (Log Pow):
6.2
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

The log Kow of the UVCB substance was determined according to OECD and EU guidelines. The study was performed using a HPLC with a C18 column. Two reference substance mixes with six resp. seven reference substances with different retention times (including toluene resp. DDT as reference substance with the highest log Kow) and thiourea for the determination of the dead time were used to produce a calibration curve, since retention time on hydrophobic columns and Kow are correlated.

As the chromatogram of the test substance solution showed signals in the dead time of the method as well as at retention times below and higher than the retention time of DDT (log POW > 6.2), the determination was performed with three mobile phases:

- methanol/water 65/35 (%v/v) for the log Kow range of 0.3 to 2.7,

- methanol/water 75/25 (%v/v) for the log Kow range of 1.7 to 6.2, and

- 100 % methanol for constituents with a log Kow > 6.2.

The determinations with mobile phases methanol/water 65/35 (%v/v) and 75/25 (%v/v) showed signals below 5% of the total peak area only. The log Kow of the test substance is therefore stated as > 6.2.

It is to be noted that, due to extensive overlap of the signals in the chromatogram, it was not possible to determine log Kow values of individual constituents.

In order to further evaluate the outcome of the log Kow test on FAV-ES, the log kow value of each individual substance in the UVCB is estimated using EpiSuite.

The QSAR results show that the constituents of FAV-ES all have a log Kow value of 5.81 or higher. The estimated log Kow value is > 6.6 for all but one FAV-ES constituents. The constituent having an estimated log Kow of 5.81 only occurs in relevant concentrations in the crude grade composition.

The results of the QSAR assessment are in line with the findings of the log Kow test, i.e. the vast majority of the constituents of FAV-ES have a log Kow value > 6.2.
