Description of key information

No toxic effects up to the limit of water solubility (< 0.05 mg/L) for Pseudomonas putida based on read-across.

As no valid study is available for assessing the acute toxicity to microorganisms of Triisotridecyl benzene-1,2,4-tricarboxylate (CAS No. 72361-35-4), in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 Grouping of substances, a read-across to the structurally related category member 1,2,4-Benzenetricarboxylic acid, mixed decyl and octyl triesters (CAS No. 90218-76-1) was conducted. The read across is justified due to a) the structural similarity of the category members and b) similar physico-chemical properties resulting in a similar environmental fate and ecotoxicity profile. Further justification is given within the endpoint summary 6.1 and within the category justification section 13.

The study with 1,2,4-Benzenetricarboxylic acid, mixed decyl and octyl triesters (CAS No. 90218-76-1) was performed under GLP but did not follow a currently standardized guideline (Diefenbach, 1994). However, the general test performance is suitable to determine effect concentrations as required for this endpoint. The effect of the test substance on the oxygen consumption of Pseudomonas putida was tested under static conditions using nominal concentrations in the range of 1 to 1000 mg/L, prepared using an emulsifier. A EC10 (4.75 h) > 1000 mg/L was determined on the basis of the nominal test concentration.

 

Thus, based on the above mentioned results, and due to the structural similarities and a consistent ecotoxicological/environmental fate profile of the substances, as are explained with in the overall endpoint summary in IUCLID chapter 6.1, it can be concluded that no toxicity of Triisotridecyl benzene-1,2,4-tricarboxylate (CAS No. 72361-35-4) to microorganisms is expected.
