Short term toxicity
A reliable 96 h LC50 value of >100 mg/L has been calculated for the effects of pentadecanol, branched and linear towards O. mykiss. Therefore the test substance has been predicted to be non-toxic at the limit of solubility, so the LC50 is >0.1 mg/L.
A reliable 48 h EC50 value of >100 mg/L has been calculated for the effects of pentadecanol, branched and linear towards Daphnia magna. Therefore the test substance has been predicted to be non toxic at the limit of solubility, so the EC50 is >0.1 mg/L. This is the only value available for this endpoint and therefore has been selected as key.
Pentadecanol, branched and linear has been esitmated, by expert judgement based on read-across from other taxonomic groups and the alcohols category, to be non-toxic at the limit of solubility to the algal taxonomic group. Therefore the EC50 value is >0.1 mg/L..
In waste-water treatment plant micro-organisms, pentadecanol does not cause inhibition at the limit of water solubility. In view of the ready biodegradability, further information is not required in REACH.
Long term toxicity
A 35 d NOEC value of >146 ug a.i./L has been determined for the effects of the pentadecanol branched on the growth, survival and hatchability of the freshwater fish Pimephales promelas. No statistically significant effects were observed at the highest concentration tested. Spine curvature was observed in a few individuals in the treatment vessels. It is possible to directly read-across the results obatined on pentadecanol branched to pentadecanol (CAS 629 -76 -5) since the two substances are closely related in composition, have similar properties and have the same molecular weight.
A reliable 21 day NOECrepro value of 7.8 µg/L was determined for the effects of the test substance on reproduction (cumulative number of offspring) of the freshwater test organism Daphnia magna. This study reflects the only value that is available for this endpoint.
In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex X, long-term toxicity testing with sediment organisms (required in Section 9.5.1) is not needed as the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I indicates that this is not necessary.
