Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Toxicity to microorganisms: Activated sludge respiration inhibition 3hr EC50 value of 400 mg/l (EC Guideline: 88/302/EC) for the read-across substance dichloro(3-chloropropyl)methylsilane

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

No reliable data are available for the toxicity to microorganisms of the submission substance trichloro(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)silane. A toxicity to microorganisms study is, however, available for the related substance dichloro(3 -chloropropyl)methylsilane. It is considered appropriate to read across the toxicity to microorganisms result for dichloro(3 -chloropropyl)methylsilane because it is considered a close structural analogue of

trichloro(2,4,4 -trimethylpentyl)silane.

Both trichloro(2,4,4 -trimethylpentyl)silane and dichloro(3 -chloropropyl)methylsilane will hydrolyse rapidly under conditions relevant to microbial toxicity assessment, to similar hydrolysis products, (2,4,4 -trimethylpentyl)silanetriol and (3 -chloropropyl)methylsilanediol, respectively.

The other hydrolysis product is HCl. Effects of hydrogen chloride on microorganisms are limited to those that result from changes to pH in unbuffered media. In this study it is likely that the inhibition was influenced by the low pH levels at the higher loading rates.
