Description of key information
Additional information
With high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic organisms.
The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.
This aquatic toxicity assessment was based on the following data:
The toxicity of the test substance to fish was investigated in a GLP guideline study according to OECD 203. No effects were observable in all nominal test concentrations up to 10000 mg/L (BASF AG 17F0093/965031, 1998). The test substance has a low solubility in water and undissolved test substance was visible in all aquaria increasing with the increase in the concentration. Therefore, it is likely that the organisms were only exposed to the maximum dissolvable amount of the test substance instead of the loading rates. Since no effects were observable in any of the treatments it is assumed that the test substance is acutely not harmful to fish in the range of its water solubility.
The toxicity of the test substance to daphnids was investigated in a GLP guideline study according to OECD 202. In this limit test, no effects were observable at a loading rate of 100 mg/L (BASF SE 50E0217/08X012, 2012). The test substance has a low solubility in water and hence it is likely that the organisms were exposed to the maximum dissolvable amount of the test substance. Since no immobilization effects were observable it is assumed that the test substance is acutely not harmful to aquatic invertebrates in the range of its water solubility.
The toxicity of the test substance to Desmodesmus subspicatus was investigated in a GLP guideline study according to OECD 201. In this test, a water accommodated fraction with a loading rate of 100 mg/L was prepared in consideration of the low water solubility of the test item. Due to the low water solubility it is likely that the algae were exposed to the maximum dissolvable amount of the test substance. The EC10 and the EC50 (72h, growth rate) were determined to exceed the loading rate of 100 mg/L (BASF SE 60E0217/08X023, 2013). Therefore, the test substance is considered to be "with high probability not harmful to aquatic algae".
The EC20 value of the test item on activated sludge was determined to exceed 1000 mg/L in a guideline study according to OECD 209 (BASF AG 00/0288/08/2, 2000). The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.
All tests were run with concentrations exceeding the water solubility of the components of the test substance. Thus, no effects in the range of the water solubility of the substance were determined. The hazard assessment of the substance reveals neither a need to classify the substance as dangerous to the environment, nor is it a PBT or vPvB substance, nor are there any further indications that the substance may be hazardous to the environment. Therefore, and for reasons of animal welfare long-term toxicity testing in fish and aquatic invertebrates is not provided.
