Short term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

In two studies according to OECD TG 202, short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates was tested. In one study, the 48h-EC50 and 48h-EC0 were 0.67 and 0.45 mg/L respectively. In the second study only the 48h-EC50 was determined (0.15 mg/L).

Long term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

For isopropylnaphthalene, no long-term toxicity study to aquatic invertebrates could be identified. Results from diisopropylnaphthalene as supporting substance are used instead.

Two tests on invertebrate reproduction with diisopropylnaphthalene have been identified. With Daphnia magna in freshwater, a NOEC of 0.013 mg/L has been determined in a valid reproduction test according to OECD TG 202, Part 2. Using Acartia tonsa in a reproduction test in sea water, a NOEC of 0.02 mg/L was obtained. Both results are close together. The NOEC for Daphnia is slightly lower and will be used to characterise the long-term aquatic toxicity of isopropylnaphthalene and for derivation of PNEC.

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

Toxicity of MIPN to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria was tested according to OECD TG 201. A 72h-EC50 value of 0.25 mg/L and a NOEC of 0.79 mg/L were determined.

Toxicity to microorganisms

Toxicity studies to microorganisms with MIPN could not be identified. With DIPN as test substance, three studies are available. Due to limited reporting (secondary literature or short communication in tabular form), the reliability is 4. As results are very similar, they are used in a weight of evidence approach.

In two tests, fresh water species have been employed (Pseudomonas putida, Tetrahymena pyriformis) in a static test. EC10 and EC0 (growth inhibition) were > 0.16 mg/L and >0.15 mg/L respectively. The third test used Vibrio fischeri in salt water measuring luminescence inhibition. The EC50 was > 0.1 mg/L. No effects were observed. Test substance concentrations were limited due to low water solubility of test substance.
