Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Fatty acids, C8-10, zinc salts:

Toxicity studies of fatty acids, C8-10, zinc salts are not available. Toxicity of octanoic acid, zinc salt, basic (CAS 90480-58-3) to the respiration of microorganisms was not observed in a guideline study with activated sludge (see Simon, 2012). Based on the lack of toxicity towards STP microorganisms, a similar low toxic potential may be assumed for soil microorganisms. Further, read-across to the assessment entities soluble zinc substances and fatty acids (C8-10) is applied since zinc cations and fatty acid anions (C8-10) determine its fate and toxicity in the environment. Please refer to the respective assessment entity for further details.

Fatty acids (C8-10):

Fatty acids as contained in plant and animal tissue are a natural component of soil, represent a significant part of the nutritional demands of soil microorganisms, are rapidly degraded and non-bioaccumulative and are therefore assumed to be of low toxic potential towards soil microorganisms.

Zinc:

For microbial assays, in total 108 individual high quality NOEC/EC10s  represent 4 nitrogen transformation processes, 5 carbon transformation processes and 8 enzymatic processes and range from 17 mg Zn/kg dw for respiration  to 2623 mg Zn/kg dw for phosphatase.
