Principles of method if other than guideline:
Before OECD Guideline 404 was establisched in 1982, skin irritation was tested using an internal BASF method. White Vienna rabbits were treated for 1, 5 and 15 minutes and 20 hours using occlusive conditions. An application site of 2.5 x 2.5 cm was covered with 80% aqueous solution of the test substance. In addition, skin tissue from the ear was tested by wrapping the ear. After application time, the skin was washed. The animals were observed 8 days and skin changes were recorded.

Irritant / corrosive response data:
- No effects were observed in animals exposed for 1, 5 or 15 minutes on the back.
- 24 hours after exposure questionable redness was observed in animals exposed on the back for 20 hours. These effects were no longer present 8 days after exposure.
- 24 hours after exposure slight redness was observed in the animals exposed for 20 h on the ear.
