Biodegradation screening studies are available for a number of substances in this category and the data suggest that the majority of streams in the category are not readily biodegradable. Based on read across from this data, the rest of the substances in this category are also considered not to be readily biodegradable.

However, a wide range in results has been reported from these ready biodegradation screening studies. The reported biodegradation ranges from 0 - 104% over 28 days. There is no clear trend in the biodegradability results with increasing carbon number. One study (Douglas and Sewell, 1989) only narrowly misses the criteria to be considered readily biodegradable. This study indicates that although not readily biodegradable these substances can be expected to biodegrade in the environment. Conversely, another study (Clarke, 2008) fulfilled the validity criteria and demonstrated that the test substance (Tetradec-1 -ene, dimer) was readily biodegradable.

Results from inherent biodegradability studies are not available for category members. However, based on the results from the ready biodegradation screening studies these substances are expected to be inherently biodegradable.
