Method

Details on study design:
Exposure levels of benzal chloride were measured in air of manufacturing plant of PVC floorings near manufacturing lines.
Exposure assessment:
measured

Results and discussion

Results:
0.15 mg/m³ near the manufacturing lines of PVC floorings was detected and 0.2 mg/m³ in air near surface film manufacturing lines was detected. Benzal chloride was a contaminant of butyl benzyl phthalate used as a plasticizer in PVC floorings. Benzal chloride was also detected in the atmosphere over a 10-day old vinyl floor tile. Furthermore, at room temperature, the emission rate of benzal chloride from PVC floorings was calculated to be about 0.01 mg per hour and square meter.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
In this study, the authors found that workers in a PVC floorings plant were exposed to 0.15 mg/m³ or 0.2 mg/m³ near processing machines of benzal chloride as a contaminant of butyl benzyl phthalate.
Executive summary:

In this study, exposure levels of benzal chloride were measured in air of manufacturing plant of PVC floorings near manufacturing lines after some cases of occupational irritation were noted.

0.15 mg/m³ of benzal chloride near the manufacturing lines of PVC floorings was detected and 0.2 mg/m³ in air near surface film manufacturing lines was detected. Benzal chloride was determined to be a contaminant of butyl benzyl phthalate used as a plasticizer in PVC floorings. Benzal chloride was also detected in the atmosphere over a 10-day old vinyl floor tile. Furthermore, at room temperature, the emission rate of benzal chloride from PVC floorings was calculated to be about 0.01 mg per hour and square meter.

However, there is no mention of the quantification method neither on the sampling method. Results are not sufficiently described and specific context of the occupational exposure is not clear. Therefore, this study should be considered as not assignable ude to insufficient documentation.
