In soil, diethyl ether - boron trifluoride reacts readily with the moisture to form diethyl ether and boron trifluoride dihydrate. Diethyl ether and boron trifluoride dihydrate are not readily biodegradable, but they have a low potential for adsorption. Diethyl ether has a logKow of ca. 1 (BUA Report 49, 1990). Boron trifluoride dihydrate, as well as its further hydrolysis products (e.g. boric acid, fluoroborates), is inorganic and has no cationic properties. Adsorption to the solid soil phase is therefore unlikely for all hydrolysis products.
