Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

This substance has high water solubility (fully miscible), a low vapor pressure (45 Pa at 20°C), and low log Kow (-0.63 at 20°C). The substance has a low potential for adsorption to soil or sediments and low potential to volatilize from water or soil to the atmosphere.

It has a well-established null potential for bioaccumulation (see ADME/toxicokinetic/bioaccumulation information in mammals, fish and algae).

2-amino-2-methylpropanol stability in aqueous media is well-established based on:
- the fact we sell aqueous mixtures of AMP since decades
- detection of unchanged AMP in urine of rats in multiple studies at body temperature
- analytical follow-up in test media in 2014 ecotoxicity studies: stability in both fresh- and saltwater media over 96h was demonstrated

Based on testing on pure batches and QSAR, 2-amino-2-methylpropanol meets criteria of ready biodegradability. Its secondary amine impurity MMAMP (CAS 27646-80-6) is of very low degradability so its presence in industrial products can alter outcomes of biodegradation testing. Pure 2-amino-2-methylpropanol should be considered as readily biodegradable in order to allow proper classification and risk assessment of pure grades such as cometic raw materials (meeting the secondary amine limit of 0.5% imposed by EU Cosmetics regulation).

Upon release to the atmosphere the compound will react with hydroxyl radicals with a predicted half-life of 5 hours.
