Short-term Toxicity to Fish

In a 96-h short-term toxicity study, Danio rerio were exposed to Ettringite at concentrations of 5.3, 10.6, 21.3, 42.5, 85 mg/l under static conditions. The 96-h LC50was > 83 mg a.i./L. Sublethal effects were not observed at all test concentrations. 


Short-term Toxicity to Invertebrates

The 48–hr-acute toxicity of Ettringite to Daphnia magna was studied under static conditions. The 48 h-EC50 was 6.8 / 7.7 mg/l (dependent on the statistical method).

It is assumed that precipitation of Aluminiumhydroxides occured in the test. Effects by the precipitate can not be excluded.


Toxicity to Algae

In a 72 hour toxicity study, the cultures of Desmodesmus subspicatus were exposed to Ettringite under static conditions in accordance with the OECD 201 Guideline. The EC50 based on growth rate was 47.4 mg/l and the EC10 was 2.3 mg/l. No abnormalities were noted. 

Toxicity to Microorganisms

A GLP guideline study following OECD 209 testing the toxicity of sodium aluminate to activated sluge was conducted at a nominal concentration of 100 mg/L. No inhibition of the respiratory rate was observed and the 3 h EC50 was determined to be > 100 mg/L and NOEC derived from test data was >= 100 mg/L.

In aqueous solutions of both Sodium aluminate and Ettringite, Al-ions are formed which are considered to determinate the ecotoxicological properties of both substances. Therefore, the results of the present test performed with Sodium aluminate will also reflect the toxicity of Ettringite to microorganisms. The effect value obtained for sodium aluminate (100 mg/L) corresponds to 613 mg/L Ettringite (stoichiometric calculation).
