Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The results of these two studies showed that read-across substance, decanoic acid, ester with 2-ethyl-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol octanoate is not harmful to algae at its water solubility limit. Therefore, by read-across, heptanoic acid, ester with 2-ethyl-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol pentanoate is not expected to be harmful to algae at its water solubility limit. As a worst case, the lowest ErL50 value was selected as the key value for chemical safety assessment.

Additional information

Two studies, which evaluated the toxicity to freshwater algae of read-across substance, decanoic acid, ester with 2-ethyl-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol octanoate, were conducted. During both static Algal Growth Inhibition tests no effects on growth rate were observed within the 72 hour test period at the tested concentrations. The first study according to OECD Guideline 201 with Desmodesmus subspicatus determined a NOEC for growth rate (ErL0) of ≥ 100 mg/L and an ErL50 > 100 mg/L (WAF loading rate). In the second study conducted using methods similar to those in OECD Guideline 201 with Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata an ErL50 and ErL10 > 1000 mg/L (WAF loading rate) was estimated. In conclusion, the results of these two studies showed that read-across substance, decanoic acid, ester with 2-ethyl-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol octanoate is not harmful to algae at its water solubility limit. Therefore, by read-across, heptanoic acid, ester with 2-ethyl-2-(hydroxymethyl) -1,3-propanediol pentanoate, which has a very similar water solubility to the read-across substance, is not expected to be harmful to algae at its water solubility limit.
