Additional information
Two K2 studies are available in which the flammability of L-leucine was investigated. The results of both studies are in good agreement with each other. In the key study, the flammability of L-leucine was examined as described in Guideline VDI 2263. In this test, L-leucine underwent slow burning with flame generation. L-leucine was therefore assigned burning number BZ 5.
Furthermore, the results of the above mentioned study were used to address the burning rate of L-leucine. The UN protocol N1 (burning rate) states that the full burning rate test should only be carried out in case in the preliminary test the burning propagate through 200 mm of the powder train in less than 2 minutes. In the experiment it was shown that the fire propagated slowly in the L-leucine powder train. It took 5 minutes and 12 seconds for the fire to propagate along 200 mm of the powder train. As a consequence, the full test was not carried out and the substances was concluded to not require classification in Division 4.1.
Justification for classification or non-classification
The criteria for classification in Division 4.1 are essentially equal to the criteria for flammable solids as described in Regulation EC N) 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP).
As a consequence, it can be concluded that classification as a flammable solid is not deemed warranted for L-leucine based on the available physico-chemical test results.
