Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Phototransformation in air

Parent compound isovaleryl chloride and hydrolysis product isovaleric acid:

After evaporation or exposure to air, the substance will be slowly degraded by photochemical processes.

This estimation refers to dry air. In mist, rain, droplets and aerosols, hydrolysis will be the major fate process of the acid chloride due to the short half-life in aqueous solution. Therefore this estimate may be of low relevance.

Hydrolysis

Parent compound isovaleryl chloride is determined to hydrolyse rapidly to isovaleric acid and HCl.

Hydrolysis product: In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the study does not need to be performed if the substance is readily biodegradable or inorganic. Isovaleryl chloride hydrolyses rapidly and forms isovaleric acid and HCl. Isovaleric acid is readily biodegradable, while HCl is inorganic.
