Because of their chemical nature, thiosulfates are stable under alkaline conditions and in the absence of (sulfur-reducing or oxidising) microbial activity. In aqueous media and particularly under acidic conditions, thiosulfates irreversibly disproportionates to sulfite and sulfate anions.
