General Information
- Name:
- Al2O3 Reaction Mass
- Not classified
- Implementation:
- EU
- Remarks:
- The reaction mass is the by-product of the ferrovanadium manufacturing process.
The manufacturing process involves the aluminothermic reduction of the following materials;
Vanadium pentoxide V2O5
Granulated metallic aluminum
Metallic iron Fe (in the form of metal scrap)
limestone CaO metallurgical
Magnesium oxide MgO
Calcium fluoride
The production of the FeV results in the chemical transformation of the input materials into FeV and the slag, which is a crystalline matrix in which various metals (e.g. Al, Mg, Ca, V) are incorporated. These metals are chemically bonded in the crystal lattice, and once incorporated into the lattice structures the metals are no longer present as the free metal oxide form. For this reason, the oxides themselves are not released from the reaction mass and, therefore, are not considered to be bioavailable. Classification and Labelling is proposed to reflect this lack of bioavailability.
