Description of key information

1,1-dimethylheptanethiol at a concentration of 50 mg/L is not inhibitory to the soil and activated sludge from a wastewater treatment facility in a composite microbial inoculum used in the test.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
50 mg/L

Additional information

The toxicity to micro-organisms was determined from the toxicity control flask in the biodegradation test on 1,1-dimethylheptanethiol. Clarke (2011) is a GLP-compliant, manometric respirometry test following OECD guideline 301F. Following REACH Guidance Chapter 7 b, the study was modified to use soil and activated sludge from a wastewater treatment facility in a composite microbial inoculum. The toxicity control flask, containing 50 mg/L 1,1-dimethylheptanethiol and 100 mg/L aniline reached 45 % degradation after 14 days and after 29 days reached 54 % degradation, showing that 1,1-dimethylheptanethiol is not inhibitory to the sewage treatment micro-organisms used in the test.
