Description of key information

The chronic NOEC in a Daphnia magna reproduction test was 0.85 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium nitrate is soluble in water and dissociates to (2 -hydroxyethyl)ammonium and nitrate.

Since there are no studies available on the aquatic toxicity of the test substance, published literature about the toxic effects of 2 -aminoethanol has been consulted alternatively.

The 21 day NOEC of 2 -aminoethanol (CAS 141-43-5) derived from toxicity testing with Daphnia magna was 0.85 mg/L (NITE, 1996).

Nitrate has not been tested for long-term effects on aquatic invertebrates because all data available concerning substances belonging to the nitrate category show a very low toxicity. In addtion, nitrates have a very high water solubility and their chemical properties do not indicate bioaccumulation. Therefore, the study is not considered necessary.
