Additional information

In vivo animal studies have been performed to evaluate the irritating/corrosiveness of the substance. Results obtained in the primary skin irritation study showed that the substance causes severe irritation following application for 3 minutes, 1 hour or 4 hours. Although there were no microscopic indications of full thickness tissue destruction, erythema and oedema persisted in all test sites exposed for 1 or 4 hours up to the conclusion of the study on day 21. In addition, blanching and desquamation were also observed in all animals up to day 10, with desquamation still observable in a single animal exposed for 4 hours at the end of the study. Similarly, in the primary eye irritation study, performed using two animals, lesions involved the conjunctiva, iris and cornea; corneal opacity did not resolve at the end of the study on day 28 in one of the animals.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance is considered to be corrosive to the skin and severely irritating to the eyes and has to be labelled with R34 – causes burns and R41 - risk of serious damage to eyes.

According to the GHS, the substance is assigned to Category 1C (H314) for skin corrosiveness and to Category 1 (H318) for eye irritation and requires signal of danger.
