Conclusion on classification

The following data are available for determining the classification and labelling requirements for the substance based on aquatic toxicity:

- A 24-hour EC50 value of 29.6 mg/L has been determined for the effects of the test substance on mobility of Daphnia magna.

- A 72-hour EC50 value of >100 mg/L and NOEC of ≥100 mg/L have been determined for the effects of the test substance on growth rate and biomass (yield) of Desmodesmus subspicatus.

The substance is not readily biodegradable (8% degradation in 28 days) and therefore meets the criteria for classification with R52/53 (Harmful to aquatic organisms. May cause long term adverse effects in the aquatic environment) according to EU Directive 67/548/EEC. In accordance with EC Regulation 1272/2008, ethylthioethanol meets the criteria for classification as Chronic Aquatic Cat. 3.
