The acute toxicity of SP-334 (2-(2-hexyl-decyloxy)-benzamide) to fish was investigated in a study conducted by Bogers (1998), according to OECD Guideline 203 under GLP conditions. Due to the poor water solubility of the substance (≤0.006 mg/L) a homogeneous solution could not be achieved by physical means (magnetic stirring and ultrasonic treatment). Therefore, a filtrate of the test solution (5 µm) was prepared at 10 mg/L (limit test, preceded by a range-finding study) using acetone as solvent (1 mL/L) in order to obtain the maximum soluble fraction. Test organisms (Cyprinus carpio) were exposed for 96 hours to the test substance within a static water regime, and effects were recorded at 3.5, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. Analytical measurement of the test concentration was performed with HPLC. No mortality or any other clinical effects were observed at 10 mg/L nominal (0.08 mg/L measured concentration).

 

In conclusion, SP-334 is not acutely toxic to fish within the range of its water solubility (≤0.006 mg/L).
