Description of key information

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex X, long-term toxicity tests to sediment organisms (required in section 9.5.1) do not need to be conducted as the substance is considered not critical with regard to sediment toxicity. The substance is expected to have a low potential absorption to sediment (calculated log Koc = -0.32 (estimated with the Kow method, KOCWIN v2.00)). Together with the high water solubility of EDDHMA-Fe (≥ 20 g/L) the substance is expected to be very mobile in the aqueous phase and will not adsorb to sediment and soil. 
According to its physico-chemical properties EDDHMA-Fe (low Pow and high water solubility) is not expected to be distributed into sediment. In view of the expected negligible adsorption of EDDHMA-Fe to sediment it can be assumed that in such tests the exposure through sediment pore water does not differ significantly from that to EDDHMA-Fe in the overlaying water and that hazards resulting from uptake of sediment can be excluded. Therefore, no further testing of long-term toxicity to sediment organisms is needed. The PNEC sediment will thus be estimated from the aquatic toxicity data.
