Since dimethyl ether - boron trifluoride rapidly decomposes in water, the biodegradability of the products dimethyl ether and boron trifluoride dihydrate is examined. The biodegradability of dimethyl ether was tested following the OECD test guideline 301 C. After the 28 days test period, biodegradation remained below 10 % (JETOC, 1985). Dimethyl ether is therefore considered poorly biodegradable. Boron trifluoride dihydrate is inorganic and is therefore not subject to biodegradation.
