- Executive summary:
The flash point of the test item was determined in a GLP-compliant study using a closed cup equilibrium method according to the EU A.9 (2008). The experiment is deemed valid, conclusive and thus suitable for assessment without restrictions.
Aliquots of the test item were injected into the sample cup of test apparatus. The sample was heated and allowed to equilibrate at the set temperature. The test flame was introduced into the sample cup for approximately 2½ s by sliding the cup shutter open. Observations were made for ignition of the vapour. If no ignition occurred, the temperature was increased and the test flame re-introduced. This was repeated until the lowest reproducible temperature at which a flash occurred, using a fresh sample, was determined.
Several times at 199 °C and at 200 °C no flash was observed, while at 201 °C measurements whenever a fresh sample was used a blue flash spread across the sample cup. As the observations were made at an atmospheric pressure of 99.5 kPa the flash point of the test item has been corrected to 201.42 ± 2 °C for standard pressure (ISO 5011, i.e. 101.3 kPa).
In conclusion the flash point was determined to be 201.42 ± 2 °C.
