Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

One acute toxicity study with earthworms is available for an EDTA-Zn complex i.e. EDTA-ZnK2(Winkelmann, 2019). The EC50 for weight was determined to be >1000 mg test item/kg dw. The active ingredient content of the test item was 90.4 %. The EC50 for weight based on active was thus >904 mg a.i./kg dw.

In terms of body weight loss, the NOEC was determined to be 316 mg/kg soil dry weight and LOEC was determined to be 1000 mg/kg soil dry weight. Corrected for active ingredient this results in a NOEC and LOEC of 285.6 and 904 mg/kg dw. For read across to EDTA-Zn(NH4) these values need to be corrected for their difference in MW (see for justification chapter 13) with a ratio of 389.7/431.8 resulting in a NOEC of 257.8 mg/kg dw.

Only one acute toxicity study with earthworms is available for EDTA-H4 (Edwards, 2009). The EC50 was determined at 156 mg/kg soil dry weight.

This corresponds to 208 mg/kg soil dw EDTA-Zn(NH4)2.

The study from Winkelmann will be, based on the higher quality, be used for the terrestrial hazard assessment.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Short-term EC50 or LC50 for soil macroorganisms:
257.8 mg/kg soil dw

Additional information

The hazard assessment of EDTA-Zn(NH4)2 reveals neither a need to classify the substance as dangerous to the environment, nor is it a PBT or vPvB substance. The substance is expected to have a low potential for adsorption based on its ionic structure under environmental relevant pH conditions and its low log Kow , the low log Kow also indicates that the substance will not be bioaccumulative. There are no further indications that the substance may be hazardous to the environment.
