Additional information

As 1,1,1-trichloroethane is nowadays only used as an intermediate for chemical synthesis in closed system processes under strictly controlled conditions, there is no formal necessity to derive PNECs for foreseeable releases in environment. Nevertheless, as acute and chronic aquatic ecotoxicity test results are available, freshwater and marine aquatic PNECs are provided. A PNEC for intermittent release is also provided for information, in case of an accidental emission, as this relates to acute effects. Other PNECs are not derived based on lack of exposure of these compartments.

Conclusion on classification

Presently, the environmental classification of 1,1,1-trichloroethane according to dir. 67/548, annex 1 and 1272/2008 regulation, annex 6, table 3.2 is

N - Dangerous for the environment.

R59 - Dangerous for the ozone layer.

According to the acute aquatic toxicity data that sets in the range 10 -100 mg/l. Chronic toxicity data are available for the 3 trophic levels and are above 1 mg/l. The substance is not rapidly biodegradable but has low potential for bioaccumulation. According to talbe 4.1.0 of Commission Regulation No 286/2011 (2nd ATP to CLP regulation), 1,1,1 -trichloroethane is not to be classified as dangerous to the aquatic environment.

According to Commission Regulation No 286/2011, 1,1,1 -trichloroethane is not to be classified as hazardous to the ozone layer "H420: Harms public health and the environment by destroying ozone in the upper atmosphere"
