Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference
Endpoint:
oxidising solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
29 May 1995 to 02 June 1995
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.17 (Oxidising Properties (Solids))
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Contact with:
powdered cellulose
Key result
Sample tested:
other: 10:90 Test material:Cellulose mixture
Parameter:
burning rate
Result:
3.45 mm/s
Remarks on result:
other: The main test indicated a false positive result, which was not reproducible in an additional test in an inert atmosphere.

Observations

Ratio 10 (test material)/90 (cellulose) to 50/50: the mixtures burned with an orange flame (height 2-4 cm; width 5-10 cm) emitting smoke

Ratio 60/40: after 20 seconds the flame was extinguished; the burning distance was less than 2 cm

Ratio 70/30: after 10 seconds the flame was extinguished; the burning distance was less than 1 cm

Ratio 80/20: after 5 seconds the flame was extinguished; the burning distance was less than 1 cm

Ratio 90/10: the mixture did not burn

Additional test

The 100 % cellulose pile could not be ignited. The barium nitrate/cellulose 70/30 mixture burned and emitted grey smoke. The pile burned for approximately 35 seconds. The test material/cellulose mixtures could not be ignited.

 40/60  80  2.50
 50/50  88  2.27
 60/40  68  2.94

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
Under the conditions of the test, the test material was determined to be non-oxidising.
Executive summary:

In a GLP compliant oxidising properties study conducted in accordance with the standardised guideline EU Method A.17, the oxidising properties of the test material were determined. Under the conditions of the study, the test material was determined to be non-oxidising.

Description of key information

The test material was determined to be non-oxidising according to a study performed in line with EU Method A.17.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Oxidising properties:
non oxidising

Additional information

The key study (Krips, 1995b) was performed in line with GLP and standardised guidelines with a sufficient level of detail to assess the quality of the study. The study was performed to a good standard and was assigned a reliability score of 1 using the principle for assessing data quality as set out in Klimisch (1997).

Justification for classification or non-classification

In accordance with the criteria for classification as defined in Annex I, Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, the substance does not require classification with respect to oxidising properties.
