Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

In contact with the flame of the gas burner, the test substance melted and turned into a light brown residue. Grey smoke was observed. After removal of the ignition source, no propagation of combustion of the test substance was observed.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The preliminary screening test was performed for the determination of the flammability of Lowinox® AH25.
Based on the results obtained, the test substance is considered ‘not highly flammable’.
Executive summary:

The aim of the study was to determine the following physico-chemical properties for Lowinox® AH25: Flammability in accordance with the following guidelines:

European Community (EC), EC no. 440/2008, Part A: Methods for the Determination of Physico-Chemical Properties, Guideline A.10: "Flammability (Solids)", Official Journal of the European Union no. L 142, May 31, 2008.

United Nations (UN), UN no. ST/SG/AC.1 0/11/Rev.4: Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Part Ill: Classification Procedures, Test Methods and Criteria Relating to Explosives of Class 3, Class 4, Division 5.1 and Class 9, Test N.1: "Test Method for Readily Combustible Solids", 2003.

The preliminary screening test was performed for the determination of the flammability of the test substance.

The test substance was loosely filled into an aluminium mould of 250 mm long with a triangular cross-section of inner height of 10 mm and width of 20 mm. On both sides of the mould in a longitudinal direction two metal plates were mounted as lateral limitations that project 2 mm beyond the upper edge of the triangular cross section. The mould was dropped three times from a height of 2 cm onto a solid surface. If necessary, the mould was filled up again. The lateral limitations were removed and the excess substance was scraped off. A non-combustible and non-porous plate was placed on top of the mould. The complete assembly was inverted and the mould removed.

A flame of a gas burner was applied to one end of the test substance pile for 2 minutes. The pile was visually interpreted for propagation of combustion either by burning with a flame or smouldering. If applicable, the time of burning over a distance of 200 mm was measured after the pile had burned a distance of 50 mm.

Results

In contact with the flame of the gas burner, the test substance melted and turned into a light brown residue. Grey smoke was observed. After removal of the ignition source, no propagation of combustion of the test substance was observed.

Conclusion

The preliminary screening test was performed for the determination of the flammability of Lowinox® AH25.

No propagation of combustion of the test substance along 200 mm length of the pile within 4 minutes was observed. According to the guidelines, performance of the burning rate test is not required. Based on the results obtained, the test substance is considered 'not highly flammable'.

Key result
Test procedure:
ignition time on contact with air
Remarks on result:
no ignition on contact with air (not further specified)

A test substance is considered pyrophoric when it ignites within five minutes of coming in contact with air.

The test substance does not contain groups that might lead to ignition in contact with air. Moreover the test substance was handled under normal laboratory conditions during this project. It demonstrated that the test substance does not ignite in contact with air. The molecular structures of impurities at <= 4% were not taken into account.

In conclusion, Lowinox® AH25 has no pyrophoric properties.

A test substance is considered pyrophoric when it ignites within five minutes of coming in contact with air.

The molecular structure of the test substance is shown in Paragraph 6.1. The test substance does not contain groups that might lead to ignition in contact with air. Moreover the test substance was handled under normal laboratory conditions during this project. It demonstrated that the test substance does not ignite in contact with air. The molecular structures of impurities at ≤ 4% were not taken into account.

In conclusion, Lowinox® AH25 has no pyrophoric properties.

Description of key information

The preliminary screening test was performed for the determination of the flammability of Lowinox® AH25. Based on the results obtained, the test substance is considered ‘not highly flammable’. Statements based on evaluation of structural features were considered sufficient to cover flammability (contact with water) and pryrophoric properties endpoints.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

The flammability study has been performed according to UN and EC guidelines and according to GLP principles.

Regarding flammability (contact with water) and pyrophoric properties: The studies have been performed according to UN and EC guidelines and according to GLP principles. Based on the molecular structure a statement rather than a full study was considered sufficient to cover these endpoints.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the above mentioned results, classification according to the CLP Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 and the Dangerous Substance Directive 67/548/EC is not considered necessary.
