Description of key information

The ready biodegradability of 2-NP was assessed in screening tests.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

2-NP is not readily biodegradable. Only a small amount of biodegradation was observed in screening tests (supporting studies). In OECD 301D closed bottle or equivalent tests, biodegradation ranged from not detected to 8 to 14% after 28 days. In a study in which radiolabeled 2-NP was added to activated sludge, 0.8% CO2 was produced in 5 days. These results are consistent with a read across approach with 1 -nitropropane (key study) which was not readily biodegradable.
