Description of key information

Guanidine hydrolytically stable, carbonate undergoes speciation

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The relevant part of the submission item Guanidine carbonate is the Guanidine (CAS 113-00-8) as discussed in the section on Environmental fate and pathways above. It is present as the Guanidinium kation (see section Dissociation constant). The Carbonate, which is fully mineralized, is negligible for the environmental assessment and disregarded in the following discussion. Nonetheless it may be subject to speciation including hydrolysis in aquatic media, this is not relevant here as these processes are reversible and do not contribute to the chemical safety assessment of the submission item as carbonate is omnipresent in the environment and in biota.

Oberascher (1999) investigated the hydrolytic stability of the submission item in a GLP study according to the OECD TG 111 protocol using Guanidine carbonate (CAS 593-85-1). The pre-test indicated a half-life at 25 °C of more than one year. Thus no DT50 was determined and the Guanidine kation is considered hydrolytically stable under environmental conditions. Accordingly hydrolysis is not expected to be a relevant environmental fate process of Guanidine as in addition to the experimental evidence this compound lacks functional groups that hydrolyze under environmental conditions (HSDB 2008, Lyman et al 1990).
