Description of key information

Under environmental conditions the hydrolysis half-life of Chlorhexidine base is more than 1 year.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Hydrolysis of Chlorhexidine digluconate and Chlorhexidine dihydrochloride were tested according to OECD Guideline 311 and EEC-Guideline C.07. Both tests were conducted at 50°C over 5 days at different pH values. No significant hydrolysis was observed at all pH values.

In contrast, products of hydrolysis were found in the study of Ackermann using Chlorhexidine diactetate as test substance. However, no pH value is reported. Therefore, these results are considered to be of lower reliability.
