The assessment of the biodegradation potential of methyl vinyl ether (CAS 107-25-5) is based on a read-across approach to the structurally similar substance isobutyl vinyl ether (CAS 109-53-5), which is characterized by has the same functional groups and a comparable molecular structure and size, according to SIDS Initial Assessment Profile 23, 17-20 October 2006.

The assessment of biotic degradation of the source chemical isobutyl vinyl ether (CAS 109-53-5) was investigated in a GLP test according to OECD guideline 310 using municipal activated sludge as inoculum (BASF 2004, 2018). After 28 days a TIC/ThIC removal of 68 +/- 8% was measured with the 10 -day window was fulfilled (68% TIC/ThIC removal at the end of the 10 -day window). Hence, isobutyl vinyl ether is readily biodegradable.

Based on the available read-across data for isobutyl vinyl ether, the target substance methyl vinyl ether (CAS 107 -25 -5) is concluded to be readily biodegradable (according to OECD criteria).
