Description of key information

The acute toxicity of the test substance to freshwater fish has been investigated.  The No Observed Effect Concentration was 32 mg/l.  Sub-lethal effects of exposure were observed at a test concentration of 100 mg/l.

Following a preliminary range-finding test, juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were exposed to the test substance over a range of concentrations of 10, 32 and 100 mg/l for a period of 96 hours at a temperature of approximately 14°C under semi-static test conditions in the dark. Analysis of the test preparations at 0, 24 and 96 hours showed measured test concentrations to range from 97% to 103% of nominal with the exception of the 10 mg/l test concentration which showed measured concentrations of 173% and 169% of nominal at 0 and 24 hours respectively. Given that the 10 mg/l test concentration was below the No Observed Effect Concentration, it was considered that these high values did not affect the integrity of the test and so the results are based on nominal test concentrations only.

The No Observed Effect Concentration was 32 mg/l.

Sub-lethal effects of exposure were observed at a test concentration of 100 mg/l. These responses were loss of equilibrium, lethargy and increased pigmentation. After approximately 72 hours exposure, all of the fish at 100 mg/l were observed with increased pigmentation which had persisted for a period of greater than 24 hours. These fish were classed as mortalities for the following 96-Hour observational time point. The resulting 96-Hour LC50 based on nominal test concentrations was 57 mg/l with 95% confidence limits of 32 - 100 mg/l.
