Description of key information

In accordance with section 7.6 of Column 2 of Annex VII, the test only needs to be conducted if, based on the structure of the substance, surface activity is expected or can be predicted. Surfactant molecules typically contain both polar (hydrophilic) and non-polar (lipophilic) moieties. In 2,6-Xylenol both the polar moiety (OH-group) as well as the non-polar (lipophilic) moiety are considered to be too insignificant to enable amphiphilic properties. Based on the absence of structural alerts, 2,6-Xylenol is thus considered not to be a surface active substance.
