Phototransformation in water

Description of key information

One reliable study was identified on the phototransformation of 2,6 -Xylenol in water using direct sunlight (Faust and Hoigne, 1987). This study measured a half-life of 7.4 hours at the surface and 19 hours at a 1 m depth. In natural water (Greifensee), a half-life of 1.9 days was measured in the upper 1 m of the water column.

The photooxidation endpoint is addressed with a well-documented publication. It was awarded a reliability score if 2 in accordance with the criteria for assessing data quality set forth by Klimisch et al. (1997).

Sensitised photooxidation of phenols by fulvic acid in natural waters was carried out using HPLC as the analytical methodology.

The study took place in June, using natural sunlight in EAWAG (Zurich) for a 4 hour period centred on solar noon. The light intensity was ~1 kW/m².

The photooxidation half-life for 2,6-xylenol for continuous sunlight measured at the surface was 7.4 hours and at a 1 m depth was 19 hours. The photooxidation half-life in the top meter of Greifensee water was 1.9 days.
