Additional information

The available experimental acute toxicity data for 1-(tert-dodecylthio)propan-2-ol (CAS 67124-09-8) indicate the need to classify the substance according to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008. The short-term values for fish and daphnids (LL50/EL50) are found far below or around 1 mg/L (Fish: LL50(96h): 0.75 mg/L WAF, Sewell, 2004 and LL50(96h): 0.42 mg/L WAF, Sewell, 2004; Daphnia magna: EL50(48h): 0.58 mg/L WAF, Goodband and Mullee, 2011 and EL50(48h): 1.3 mg/L WAF, Sewell, 2004). Furthermore, the substance was found to be not readily biodegradable by attaining only 5.9 % degradation after 28 days (Kung, 1998). The partition coefficient was determined experimentally, resulting in a logPow of 4.72 to 6.51 at 20 °C (Walker, 2011). Taking this result into account, the predicted Bioconcentration factor (BCF) range of the substance can be reported as 25.52 - 387 (EPIWIN software BCFBAF v3.01 by US-EPA). The warranty for a classification and labelling of the substance cannot be refuted by the experimentally obtained long-term NOEC/NOELR for daphnids during the conducted 21 -day reproduction test, since it also far below 1 mg/L (0.32 mg/L WAF, Wetton, 2003). Water Accomodated Fractions (WAFs) are prepared in the experiments since the substance was found to be only slightly water soluble (4.84 mg/L at 20 °C, Woolley and Mullee, 2003). This procedure is in accordance to the corresponding test guidelines.

Taking into account the described substance properties, 1-(tert-dodecylthio)propan-2-ol has to be classified as "Aquatic Chronic 1" with Hazard statement H410 (Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects) and labelled with hazard pictogram GHS09 (environment) and Precautionary statements P273 (Avoid release to the environment), P391 (Collect spillage) and P501 (Dispose of contents/container in accordance with local/regional/national/international regulations).

Conclusion on classification

The available acute toxicity data to fish and daphnids leads to the classification and labelling of the test substance according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council. The classification is "Aquatic Chronic 1" with Hazard statement 410 (H410; Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects) and Precautionary statements P273 (Avoid release to the environment), P391 (Collect spillage) and P501 (Dispose of contents/container in accordance with local/regional/national/international regulations). The corresponding label is pictogram GHS 09 (environment).
