Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Short description of key information:
In-vitro studies in bacteria showed positive results for genetic toxicity in strains TA100 and TA1535 of S. typhimurium both in the presence and absence of metabolic activation (Greene et al, 1979). Positive results were also observed in in-vitro studies assessing enhancement of SA7 virus transformation and chemical transformation of secondary hamster embryo cells (Greene et al, 1979). Negative results for genetic toxicity were observed in in-vitro bacterial studies with S. typhimurium strains TA1537 and TA1538 in addition to in-vitro studies with Chinese hamster ovaries (Greene et al, 1979).
Positive mutagenicity results were observed in a host-mediated assay using S. typhimurium strain TA1535 (Greene et al, 1979). Negative results were observed in the-vivo rat cytogencicty study (Terrill et al, 1982) and the testicular DNA synthesis study (Greene et al, 1979).

Endpoint Conclusion: Adverse effect observed (positive)

Justification for classification or non-classification

In accordance with the harmonised scheme for classification and labelling in Regulation EC 1272/2008 (index number 603 -067 -00 -X), phenylglycidyl ether is classified as a Category 2 Mutagenic substance.
