Description of key information

Several experimentally determined values for the viscosity of naphthenic acid were reported following the ASTM D445-72 method and were considered reliable with restrictions (K2). Values reported were 22, 85, 85, 100, 130, 1570 mm²/s at 25°C and were used in a weight of evidence approach to cover the endpoint.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Viscosity:
796 mm²/s (static)
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

Because naphthenic acid is a mixture of many different isomers of cycloalkyl carboxylic acids, physicochemical properties vary according to the proportions of the individual compounds in their composition. Therefore it is not possible to set a specific value for viscosity as this will vary dependent on the hydrocarbon component make-up of the complex mixture. A set of six studies conducted according to method ASTM D445 -72 on various naphthenic acids are addressed in this dossier. The results show a wide variation among values ranging from as little as 22 up to 1570 mm²/s at 25°C depending on composition. The data indicate that it is not possible to set a unique value for this UVCB.
